Iran mulls sending humanitarian aid to Armenia: report

TEHRAN – An Iranian lawmaker, who is originally Armenian, has said that the authorities in Iran are considering sending humanitarian aid to Armenia amid an exodus of Karabakh Armenians from the disputed region.

The lawmaker, Robert Beglaryan, told the Armenian news outlet “NEWS am” that Mehdi Sobhani, the Ambassador of Iran to Armenia, has written a letter to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urging them to take immediate action and send humanitarian aid from Iran to Armenia.

Beglaryan also mentioned that negotiations had taken place with the Iranian Red Crescent Society.

The Iranian government is in the process of making preparations, according to the Iranian lawmaker.

“Three days ago, another (ethnic Armenian) Iranian parliament member, Ara Shahverdyan, and I met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and expressed our concerns about the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, the situation with the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, and the potential crimes and threats of deportations of Armenians,” Beglaryan said on September 27.

He added, “We called on the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pay closer attention to these issues. A relevant report has already been prepared and will be submitted to the head of the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who is returning from New York today.”

The departure of Karabakh Armenians took place in the wake of a surrender agreement between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the local authorities of the disputed region. The Russian-brokered agreement included a self-dissolution of Armenian institutions in Karabakh. Following the 28 September announcement, tens of thousands of Karabakh Armenians have left their homeland for neighboring Armenia.

The Azerbaijani forces entered the region following the announcement.

The complete departure of Karabakh Armenians could potentially put an end to the decades-long conflict over the region and pave the way for a peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan, all at the expense of the historical residents of the Karabakh region.
